The chancellor said that the terrible incident, which involved more than 80 firefighters, 12 engines and was still being 'damped down' the following day, had saddened people across capital and beyond.

The grant has come from the fines levied against banks after the Libor rate-rigging scandal and will be used to not only repair the damage caused by the flames but also to help continue the ongoing restoration.

Local Tory MP Jane Ellison said: “I am hugely grateful for this support which will help enormously with the restoration of a building that is an integral part of Battersea’s past and present.”
